Great Wolf Lodge Double Homicide: Suspect Accused of Killing Husband and Young Son

crimeSignificance: 4/10

The Facts

Metallica Harrison is accused of killing her husband and 3-year-old son at a Great Wolf Lodge resort in the Poconos. Police have conducted a search of the family's home as investigators work to establish a motive. The victims were a man and a young child, and the case involves a stabbing.

How different outlets are framing this

ABC News takes a relatively restrained, procedural approach to the story, focusing on the active police investigation and the search for a motive. The outlet presents the facts of the accusation without speculating on intent or premeditation, framing the story around law enforcement activity rather than personal details about the suspect.

Fox News, by contrast, leads with details sourced from the suspect's stepmother that point toward alleged premeditation — specifically, the draining of a family 401(k) account and the reported bringing of kitchen knives from home. By foregrounding these details and using the word 'massacre' in its headline, Fox News frames the story as one of deliberate, calculated violence rather than an incident whose motive remains under investigation. The outlet amplifies a family member's account prominently, giving it significant evidentiary weight in the framing, even though these are unverified allegations from a single source.

Notably, neither outlet has significant international coverage represented here, meaning the story is being treated primarily as a domestic U.S. crime story. The key divergence between the two American outlets is one of tone and sourcing: ABC News anchors the narrative in official investigative activity, while Fox News builds a premeditation narrative through a relative's claims, potentially shaping audience perception of guilt and intent before any legal process has concluded.
